After being cancer-free for 2 1/2 years, I had a recurrence this year of the same rare atypical neuroendocrine lung cancer that I had in 2015. This time my Winship dream team of doctors ( Drs. Szabo, Curran and Ramalingam) determined radiation would be the most effective to kill the cancer. My husband, Don, never left my side and we spent 24 straight days in April and May driving to Winship’s for radiation.

In addition to my husband, daughters and girl friends, music played such a big role in lifting my spirits during these radiation treatments. Laying on the radiation table I decided I had to tie our team name together with the significance of music’s that was radiating from Winship and we needed to enhance the Lungs N’ Roses logo. So what happened?

The initial inspiration came from me viewing The Joel A. Katz “Music is Medicine” Collection of memorabilia that’s on display on the tunnel walls as you walk into Winship’s Radiation Oncology department. We would step left off the elevator and a huge smile would take over me by just looking at this awesome historical collection. And then once in the radiation room classic rock music played over the speakers and I never really felt alone. When the music wasn’t loud enough I asked the technicians to turn up the volume. I focused on the music that was streaming and I quickly realized it was also my “medicine” as I had to lay perfectly still when the radiation beams entered my body.

Music was also important and healing to my friend and Lungs N’ Roses co-captain, Tammi Fisher, who sadly passed away from lung cancer last September. Her son, Andrew, told me that he, created several playlists of her favorite songs and the tunes always made her feel better. Tammi’s smile, kindness and love touched all who knew her. She inspired me to stay strong and I know she will forever be in our hearts.

I hope you love the new look of our shirts as much as me. They are the same wick-proof material as last year and are available again in mens short sleeves and women tanks. This year shirts are being sold together with a custom running hats for $30. Please email me (erica.aronin@comcast.net) with your order information and send your payment via Venmo.
